“Hoosiers”
Gene Hackman stars in this basketball story about a small high school in Indiana. Hickory was a very small town in Indiana. College basketball coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman,) gets a job with the small team and says they will play basketball his way or they won’t play. The people of the town aren’t pleased with the team’s start, until an all-star player named Jimmy Chitwood (Maris Valainis), comes to play. Dale and Hickory march all the way to the State Championship game. According to IMDb this movie was rated 7.6/10, and is one of the all-time classic movies, the story of a true underdog.
“Miracle”
The 1960’s and 70’s were filled with heartbreak and disappointment for the USA hockey team, and the country was struggling with the Vietnam War and inflation. Herb Brooks took over as head coach for the USA Olympic hockey team in 1980. Brooks (Kurt Russell) would put kids he had coached before, not of superstars. As shown in the movie, the team struggles to get along but comes together at the right time. The movie captures drama in sports at its finest – how a country could come together after the biggest game in USA hockey history. IMDb’s rating is 7.4/10.
“Rocky”
“Rocky” stars Sylvester Stallone in this boxing masterpiece. A small-time boxer gets a chance to fight world champion Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) and although he doesn’t win the bout, he wins the admiration of Creed. The movie won three Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and created five sequels. “Rocky” is a movie of hard work and triumph. For sure, it is the best boxing movie of all time. IMDb’s rating is 7.4/10.
“Field of Dreams”
Kevin Costner stars in a sports movie like no other. Ray Kinsella (Costner) hears a voice one day while he is working in his cornfield,’’ If you build it, they will come.” Kinsella cuts his crop to make a baseball field. In doing this, he loses a lot of money. One day a man shows up on his field: Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta). Ray allows him to play and another day, many more players come out of the cornfield to play on this field. The story shows how Kinsella was always searching for his dreams and how one day, his dreams came to him. The impossible was possible after all. IMDb’s rating is 7.4/10.
“Remember the Titans”
The segregation at TC Williams High School in Virginia was a big problem in 1971. The football team was gearing up for the season when Herman Boone, a black coach played by Denzel Washington, gets the head coaching job at TC Williams. Angry white families showed Boone he wasn’t welcome. Boone takes the segregated team to camp. Boone takes his team on an all-night run through the forest and to a battle sight of the Civil War. The Titans would come together, proving that segregation was not something that could stop them. “Remember The Titans” captures the drama, conflict and emotions of the era through the true story of the 1971 Titans football team; IMDb’s rating is 7.6/10.
