Make a Difference Club is getting into the holiday spirit once again! This club was started a few years ago by a new student who struggled a bit to make friends. The student and History/ English teacher Pam VanThomme teamed up and created this after-school activity with an overall goal of making a difference in not only the community, but also at L’Anse Creuse High School- North as a whole.
“We focus more on us here at North…” Sara Hoxha ‘15, president of Make a Difference Club, said. “We’re not trying to save Africa necessarily, just trying to make a difference.”
This winter the group of students will be putting together Christmas baskets for the homeless families of L’Anse Creuse North.
“It’s an honor to help the people around us. When they are people we see every day, we cannot not help.” Hoxha said.
The club has contacted the families in need and they have been very specific to mention whether they have a son or daughter, and what age they are.
“More kids are volunteering for the club this year, so there’s more stuff for the families in the baskets, so that’s really nice, “ Anna Valentic ’15 said. “I’m glad I could be a part of this again this year, because it’s helpful to the families.”
It is the students’ jobs to make sure the baskets get put together accordingly.
“It was so cool seeing kids give back last year, and it made the students feel good that they could give back to fellow students,” said VanThomme.
The club has received many donations which helps a lot, but the group has been fundraising by selling chocolate bars and suckers. They will continue to fundraise throughout the next couple of months. VanThomme said the club would also love to start doing something for all the new students that come to LCN throughout the year.
Meetings are usually held on Tuesdays after school. See VanThomme in room 229 for more information.
