Going to States is a huge accomplishment, but going to states as a freshman is flat-out phenomenal. Thomas Michno ’17 made States in Cross Country. Michno ran the 5k race in 16.30 which qualified him for the cut to make it to states.
“When I found out I made states, I was very excited. I worked hard to get where I’m at and thankfully, I have great teammates and coaching to push me to get better,” Michno said.
Coach Jason Hubbard said, “The end of the season was very stressful for Thomas. He was capable of finishing anywhere from tenth to twentieth at Regionals and needed to finish in the top 15 to qualify for the State Finals. He handled all the pressure extremely well and when it came time to perform, he did and qualified for the State Finals.”
Michno has a lot of friends to help him along the way. He always had someone to push and motivate him to achieve his greatest potential.
“Thomas works really hard. He runs to the best of his ability every run. He pushes the whole team, he is a good leader and I’m really proud of him,” said Emily Oehmke ’16.
Michno has been running for the last four years and said that his parents motivate him the most. They are his biggest fans.
“My parents made me the person I am today. They taught me how to work hard and that I can accomplish anything if I put my mind to it. I don’t know what I would do without them,” said Michno
He has a bright future with running. Michno hopes to run at college and sees himself at Michigan State or Hillsdale. With three more years to compete, he will be a big asset to the cross country team in years to come.
