Playing pond hockey is an amazing game for many hockey fans. Being outdoors with friends and playing the game of hockey is an awesome feeling. The best part of pond hockey is anyone can play it and have fun.
“I’ve never really played hockey, but playing pond hockey is a great way to get out with your friends and have fun,” said Danny Orr ‘14.
Pond hockey is a great way to stay in shape as well. It is an intense game and requires a lot of movement but is a decent workout.
Tyler Evans ‘16 said, “I love to play because it’s a great way to stay in shape on off days and is fun to play with friends.”
Almost all hockey players started skating on ponds when they were very young, dreaming that they scored the Stanley Cup-winning goal in overtime. Pond hockey has become very popular in the United States in the last 10 years.
The U.S.A. Pond Hockey Championship take place once a year in Lake Nokomis, Minnesota. More than 200 teams battle it out over 25 rinks on Lake Nokomis, according to uspondhockey.com.
Whether it is a huge tournament or one-on-one, pond hockey is for everyone.
Griffin Hayes ‘14 said, “I’ve played travel hockey my whole life but I’ve never played pond hockey.”
There are no rules when it comes to pond hockey, just play the game. Important tactics when it comes to pond hockey are passing. The puck moves faster than the player and especially on a big pond, passing becomes key.
The way this winter is going, fans might have another month to play!
