In the past, Varsity Boys’ Basketball has been very popular and successful at LCN. Students have always been very supportive of the team and look forward to cheering the boys to victory. It is not surprising that this year’s team is yet again filled with talent.

The varsity team has participated in countless hours of preparation for this season. From lifting weights to after school practices, these boys are ready to play.

Senior Collin Kerpet ‘15 said, “We are preparing for the season by running, lots of conditioning, and building camaraderie among the team.”

Coach Jay Seletsky said, “Our players need to remain focused and dedicated from the get-go in order for us to continue and grow and get better as the season goes on.”

The boys feel confident about their level of play but continue to push themselves to improve every day. The team has high hopes for this season, and they are ready for tough competition.

Jimmy Tocco ‘16 said, “Every season is a tough one when you’re competing in the MAC Red.”

Coach Seletsky agreed with Tocco and said, “There are no nights off. We have a challenging non-league schedule as well, with Detroit Country Day, West Bloomfield, and Ecorse.”

Working as a team is an extremely important component for any successful team; therefore, the varsity boys expect a lot out of each other.

Kerpet said, “I expect 100 percent effort from my teammates. I always hope they want to succeed as badly as I do.”

Andre Johnson ‘15 said, “I expect this season to be a great one. I am very excited for the season to begin.”

The team has set many goals for themselves this year, and they are working hard to achieve them. When asked what their personal goals were, all of the boys selflessly responded with goals they have for the entire team.

Andrae Powell ‘15 said, “The goal this year is to win the MAC Red and districts.”

Powell’s teammates and coach agreed that those are the goals for the team this year and they are going to work hard every day to achieve them.

Behind every great team is a great coach, and Coach Seletsky is just as excited about this year’s team as his players.

Coach Seletsky said, “This team has tremendous length and athleticism, which provides for a new type of option offensively. Because of our individual and team make-up, we are welcoming a few new twists on offense and defense.”

The Varsity Boys’ Basketball Team began the season at home against L’Anse Creuse at the Dave Jackson Tip-off Classic, which was held on Saturday, December 13.
